A British team has unveiled plans to build an ambitious underwater habitat called Sentinel. If the project goes ahead, it would function like the International Space Station - but underwater instead of in orbit. It could also revolutionise deep-sea research by allowing scientists to live relatively comfortably underwater for long periods of time.

Modular and relocatable

The project is being led by the aptly named Deep, an ocean technology and exploration company. The installation is planned off the south-west coast of England and will be at a depth of about 200 metres. The base would be modular and relocatable so that it could be deployed elsewhere if needed. The base will be located in the so-called epipelagic zone whose lower boundary is the deepest point where sunlight penetrates the ocean. This is where an estimated 90% of marine life is located. As

Advanced stage

After two years of intensive and pioneering research into innovative manufacturing processes and materials science, Deep is at an advanced stage of technical design and production has started. The system offers a new and more effective way to live and work underwater than was previously possible. Until now, underwater facilities have been temporary and at a fixed location.

Despite being in one of the most challenging environments on Earth, the scientists could live surprisingly comfortably. There would be research laboratories and communal areas, as well as bedrooms with single beds, storage space and even a TV for entertainment. Bathrooms would include a shower, toilet and sink. It is not the Ritz, but it is far away from the claustrophobic conditions associated with submarines.

Although Deep hopes to be operational from 2027, there are still hurdles to overcome. Deep says it is currently in talks with potential investors and partners to try to complete the project.
