Damen Shipyards explains during ESEF Maakindustrie 2022
On 2 September, during ESEF Maakindustrie at the Koninklijke Jaarbeurs in Utrecht, Dewi Wesselman, Group Sustainability Coordinator at Damen Shipyards Group, will lead an inspiring session on sustainable business practices within her sector. She will discuss Damen’s ambition to become the world’s most sustainable shipbuilder in the future. During her session, she will explore the challenges involved – the biggest of which is the design and construction of a 100% circular ferry by 2025. Just how feasible is that, really?[/column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][column_text]Wesselman, who has a background in Strategic Product Design and Communication Design for Innovation at Delft University of Technology, has been working for Damen Shipyards Group since 2017. She focuses on circularity and contributes ideas regarding the entire life cycle of a ship. She spends around three days a week working on the realisation of this project to design and build a 100 per cent circular ferry by 2025.‘It’s a Big Hairy Audacious Goal,’ she says.‘It does make us feel a bit nervous, to be honest. But that’s also the point of our sustainability ambition. It’s time to create a sense of urgency
and take action. We need to start putting our money where our mouth is.’[/column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][column_text]
Not yet an answer to everything
During her session, Wesselman delves deeper into the process of designing and building a circular ferry. She discusses effective circular solutions that are already well understood, such as the interior.
But she also offers a candid view of the challenges they face:‘Take the batteries, for example,’ she says.‘Neither the input nor the output is currently circular. From a technical perspective, making a battery circular is a huge challenge. We’re investigating what’s
is needed. Or indeed how we can get the whole supply chain on board with our journey. After all, it’s something we need to do together.’[/column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][column_text]
Sharing knowledge and exchanging experience
Wesselman is also keen to connect with others facing similar challenges.‘At Damen, we’re always on the lookout for fruitful collaborations or insights. We find it interesting to receive input from other industries. I’ll talk about the process we’re currently working on – we’ve still got a long way to go.
