Defence joins the Covenant on Hydrogen and Mobility province of Utrecht. It will eventually deploy at least three hydrogen-powered vehicles in the province of Utrecht.

The province aims to make mobility more sustainable by the end of 2025. This, for example, by running vehicles and vessels on green hydrogen. This goal fits in with Defence's emission-free vehicles project. Hydrogen can make a major contribution to this, says Rear Admiral Peter Knipping. He signed the covenant on behalf of Defence. "Every litre of diesel in a generator in a distant mission area has cost a multiple of litres to get it there. That can be done differently and hydrogen is a solution."

Strengthen the region

"With this, we hope to convey that Defence, based on the principle of 'stronger together', wants to strengthen the region not only in word, but also in deed. We do this by linking Defence initiatives already underway, such as emission-free vehicles and sustainable area development, to the ambitions of municipalities and the province of Utrecht. "

Hydrogen-powered vehicles

As part of the plan, Defence will eventually deploy at least three hydrogen-powered vehicles in the province. In addition, Defence is investigating whether it is possible to store hydrogen on its own premises and whether there is room for a semi-public hydrogen filling station. Finally, it is taking a non-committal look at the possibilities for using hydrogen in military equipment.

Vehicles under development

Hydrogen-powered vehicles are still under development. At the end of this year, it will become clear at what time Defence can deploy the vehicles.
