Electric hydrofoil from BMW

The all-new Icon electric hydrofoil looks much more like a design project than a BMW, but in fact it is both. The craft, a collaboration between BMW Group Designworks, German boat builder TYDE and Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer, could certainly make an impressive film set. Instead, the craft debuted on the water at the 76th Cannes Film Festival.

Icon has enough battery power for a distance of 93 km (50 nautical miles), a trio of hydrofoils for silent, efficient and fast cruising, and more than enough windows for paparazzi-level celebrities to spy on. Technically, the Icon is an outlier; in terms of design, it looks more like an aircraft than a boat. The oversized design, the prism-like window section sandwiched between the hull and a wing-like roof and the striking, contrasting colours make the Icon a true icon.

Eye-catching styling

The Icon's distinctive styling does not just apply to its exterior. The design is also meant to offer a unique experience on board. The windows naturally offer unforgettable views while the bow widens aft into a lounge that is also covered in glass from bottom to top. The aft lounge features angular furniture that is as avant-garde as the ship itself. The seats can rotate 360 degrees for maximum experience. The arrangement of the furniture follows the triangular shape of the vessel.

BMW contribution

The traditional steering wheel environment has given way to a digital 'command centre' that BMW has clearly had its finger on. This is evident, for instance, in the steering wheel and the oversized 32-inch 6K HMI touchscreen with BMW Operating System 8 for intuitive operation. The presentation of digital information and voice commands are reminiscent of the electric BMW car series.

Icon is equipped with six BMW i batteries totalling 240 kWh. Combined with hydrofoils that reduce drag and a pair of 100-kW motors, the 13.14-metre-long craft reaches a top speed of 30 knots. Its range is 50 nautical miles (93 km) per charge .

As for Hans Zimmer's role in the design, the BMW regular developed the soundtrack for the journey, which passengers can enjoy via the on-board Dolby Atmos system. Via a tablet, passengers can adjust audio settings and other infotainment functions.
