TNO has publicly demonstrated for the first time the Mass Customisation Line: a research line devised by TNO that enables customisation and large-scale application of flexible solar films. The future production process is accelerated and the use of perovskite increases the strategic independence of the European PV industry.

The Mass Customisation Line is designed to produce customised PV semi-finished products in large volumes to reduce cost price. The research line can process various solar cell types, and is prepared for perovskite cell technology. Thanks to this innovation, solar foils and integrated PV solutions can soon be produced fully customised to the specific needs of the building sector. This means that solar energy can be easily and quickly integrated into building materials, facades and roofs of both existing and new buildings. This significantly reduces installation costs and accelerates the energy transition.

Opportunities for manufacturing industry

"With the Mass Customisation Line, we show that the Netherlands and Europe can lead the way in the production of innovative solar solutions. This offers huge opportunities for our manufacturing industry: from machine builders to construction companies and material producers. By investing together in this technology, we not only strengthen our competitive position, but also create high-quality jobs in the region," said Roland Valckenborg, senior project manager at TNO Solar.

The TNO-developed production line for flexible perovskite solar laminates is also unique in the world. Flexible laminates with solar functionality can be produced in every conceivable variation of size, shape and electrical power. Perovskite is a promising thin-film material for solar energy. It offers advantages over traditional silicon: it is cheaper, more efficient and the raw material to produce it is abundantly available.

Strategic independence

Valckenborg continued: "With this technology, we are increasing Europe's strategic independence. Perovskite is a material that is widely available, making us less dependent on critical raw materials from other parts of the world. This is essential for a competitive, sustainable and resilient European PV industry."
