Architectural firm Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) is working on an island community of sustainably designed timber homes that are flexible in size and style.

The Roatán Próspera Residences is planned for the island of Roatán near Honduras, and will include a yet unknown number of homes. The residences range from small studio flats to larger family homes. They will be manufactured locally from sustainable timber and assembled on site.

Flamboyant design

Judging by the initial drawings, ZHA's distinctive, flamboyant style translates as much to wood as to concrete. The houses are characterised by large curved roofs and generous window openings. Interiors are arranged around open-plan living spaces and are complemented by generous terraces.

ZHA emphasises that the homeowners of Roatán Próspera Residences will be able to fully customise their homes to suit their needs. The idea is that they choose the placement of furniture and materials, plus the interior layout and any extras, such as a playroom. For maximum flexibility, the firm has created a dedicated digital platform for the project.

Configuration platform

The configuration platform adapts each house to the site and any special features. It also offers a choice of built-in furniture modules and spatial layouts to suit individual lifestyles and preferences. Homeowners can also appoint local suppliers to create furniture specific to each room. The platform provides all the resources for this, including a 3D model of the home.

Besides the sustainably produced timber, other eco-friendly aspects of the project include water collection. In addition, canopies will have integrated solar panels, which will be connected to batteries to store electricity. Roatán Próspera Residences is being realised in collaboration with Hilson Moran Partnership and ATK II, which was also involved in ZHA's Generali Tower in Milan. Construction is expected to start later this year. There is no word yet on the cost of the residences.
